The "pin prick test" is a simple, no-tech method for evaluating honey bee hygienic behavior. Beekeepers use a pin to puncture a small section of capped brood, killing the pupae. The bees' ability to quickly uncap and remove the dead brood within 24 hours indicates their hygienic trait, crucial for defending against diseases and pests like Varroa, American foulbrood and chalkbrood. A high percentage of removal (over 95%) in repeated tests shows a truly hygienic colony.
